Glass Types

Types of Shower Screen Glass Explained

Each shower screen glass type changes how your bathroom looks, feels, and performs. The differences come down to privacy, light, and how much maintenance you’ll notice day to day.

Most Common

Clear Toughened Glass

Clear toughened glass keeps the shower open, bright, and easy to match with any bathroom style. It offers the clearest view, though water spots and soap marks show more if it’s not cleaned regularly.

Opti (Low-Iron) Glass

An ultra-clear upgrade that removes the green tint found in standard clear glass. Ideal where colour accuracy matters, especially in bathrooms with white or feature tiles.

Fluted (Reed) Glass

Textured glass with vertical lines that soften visibility. It provides a balance of privacy and light while helping hide water spots and fingerprints — a practical advantage on the Gold Coast.

Frosted / Acid Etched Glass

Frosted or acid etched glass gives you strong privacy with soft, even light. Its matte finish suits shared bathrooms but can hold marks over time.

Tinted Shower Glass

Available in grey or bronze tones. It reduces glare and adds a darker, more subdued look, with slightly less light passing through. Best for a room with a lot of light.

Decision Guide

Choosing the Right Shower Glass for Your Bathroom

Most decisions come down to a few practical factors — privacy, light, cleaning, and the overall look you’re aiming for.

Privacy vs Openness

For a fully open feel, clear or Opti glass is the obvious choice. It keeps the space visually uninterrupted and works well in ensuites or bathrooms where privacy isn’t a concern.

For shared or family bathrooms, frosted glass gives you full privacy, while fluted glass sits in the middle — it softens visibility without completely closing the space off.

Recommendation

Ensuite → Clear or Opti  |  Family bathroom → Fluted or Frosted

Light and Bathroom Size

In smaller bathrooms, clear or Opti glass helps maximise light and keeps the room feeling larger. It allows both natural and artificial light to move freely through the space.

Tinted glass reduces glare and adds mood, but it also darkens the area slightly. It works better in larger bathrooms or spaces that already get plenty of light.

Recommendation

Small bathroom → Clear or Opti | Larger space → Tinted works well

Cleaning and Maintenance

Some glass types will show more than others — and this matters long term. Clear glass looks sharp, but it shows water spots, soap scum, and streaks more clearly if not maintained properly . If you prefer a lower-maintenance look, fluted or tinted glass tends to hide marks better.

This is also where glass protection comes into play, which can significantly reduce cleaning time regardless of the glass you choose. Ask about our Glass Coating options to help alleviate the cleaning process and longevity of the glass

Recommendation

Low maintenance priority → Fluted or Tinted | Add nano coating for any type

Design Style and Finish

Clear and Opti glass suits modern, minimal designs where you want clean lines and visibility. Fluted or tinted glass works better when you want the shower to be the feature.

For family bathrooms, privacy glass — frosted or Satinlite — is often the more practical choice, especially when the space is used by multiple people throughout the day.

Recommendation

Minimal/modern → Clear or Opti | Feature shower → Fluted or Tinted

Glass Thickness

Shower Screen Glass Thickness — 6mm vs 10mm

Glass thickness isn’t just a technical detail — it directly affects how your shower screen looks, feels, and is constructed. The choice usually comes down to whether you’re going frameless or semi-frameless.

10 mm
Frameless Shower Screens
Thicker glass, no frame required

10mm toughened glass is used in frameless shower screens. It’s thicker and more rigid, allowing the screen to stand without support from a full frame. This creates a clean, minimal look with fewer visual interruptions, and gives the screen a more solid, substantial feel when the door opens and closes.

  • No frame required — glass is self-supporting
  • Clean, minimal, high-end appearance
  • Solid and heavy feel — 10mm door is noticeably substantial
6 mm
Semi-Frameless & Sliding Screens
Lighter glass, frame or track supported

6mm toughened glass is used in semi-frameless and sliding shower screens. Because the glass is thinner, it relies on a frame or track system for support. This allows for more flexible designs — including sliding doors and pivot systems — while keeping costs lower than frameless options.

  • Supported by perimeter frame or sliding track
  • Framed or partially framed appearance
  • Lighter, more flexible — suited to sliding and pivot systems

All REGAL shower screen glass — 6mm and 10mm — is toughened safety glass manufactured to meet Australian Standards AS2208 and AS1288, ensuring strength, durability, and compliance for residential use.

Shower Glass Protection and Coatings

A glass coating is applied to the glass during manufacturing to create a water-repellent surface. Instead of sticking, water beads and runs off — taking soap residue and minerals with it. At REGAL, the coating is applied to both sides of the glass during production for full, even coverage.

  • Less cleaning — reduces build-up from daily use
  • Prevents staining — helps protect against hard water marks and etching
  • Maintains clarity — keeps glass looking clear for longer

If reducing cleaning long-term matters to you, this is worth considering when ordering your shower screen.
