They’ve become a strong design trend in modern Australian bathrooms, and the questions I get are consistent — what makes them different from a standard shower screen, what choices are involved, and what does it actually cost.

This guide covers what you actually need to know before ordering. What makes a glass panel different from a standard shower screen, what decisions you need to make upfront, how configuration affects the final result, and what to watch for when it comes to budget. Configurations: Matching the Panel to Your Space

One of the biggest advantages of a fixed shower panel is its adaptability. Every panel we supply is custom-cut to fit your bathroom’s exact dimensions. There is no standard size or set configuration.

That said, there are a few common configurations worth understanding before you get to the measure stage.

• Single fixed panel is the most common setup. One panel is fixed to a tiled wall, creating an open entry on the other side. It works well in alcove showers and any recess where the walls contain most of the spray naturally. It is particularly effective in smaller bathrooms, where even a frameless sliding door can feel heavy and enclosed.
• Panel with return adds a smaller fixed panel at a right angle to the main panel. This gives better water containment without closing the entry off completely. We see this configuration a lot in bathrooms where the shower recess is wider or where the showerhead is positioned toward the open side.
• Floor-to-ceiling panel runs the full height of the wall, creating a more architectural look. This works especially well in bathrooms with high ceilings or feature tiles the owner wants to keep fully visible.
• Fixed return as wet room divider suits open-plan wet room layouts where there is no defined recess at all. The panel divides the shower zone from the rest of the bathroom without enclosing it.

One thing I always mention to customers at the planning stage: we measure and cut after tiling is complete. The panel is made to the final finished dimensions of your bathroom, not the framed or pre-tile dimensions. This is worth factoring into your renovation timeline.

Glass Options: What Each Type Does

The glass is where most of the real design decisions happen. Our glass shower panels are made from 10mm toughened safety glass, and there are several glass options to choose from depending on how much privacy you want and the look you are going for.

• Clear glass is the most popular by a significant margin. It keeps the bathroom feeling open and lets your tiles do the work. If you have invested in quality tiling or a feature wall, clear glass is usually the right choice. Nothing obscures the view.
• Reed/fluted glass has become one of our most requested options over the past few years. The vertical grooves create a soft, textured look that adds visual interest without blocking light. It also hides water spots and fingerprints better than clear glass, which is a genuine practical advantage for anyone who does not want to wipe the screen down every day. If you are after a contemporary bathroom with some character, fluted is worth serious consideration.
• Spotswood is a patterned textured glass that sits in similar territory to fluted: some privacy, some light transmission, a distinctive look. It is less common, but a good option if you want something a little different.
• Acid etch/frosted gives full privacy. The glass is treated to create a matte, even finish that diffuses light softly without blocking it entirely. It is worth knowing that frosted glass is slightly harder to clean than clear or fluted, because the texture can hold soap residue.
• Tinted glass has a smoke, grey, or bronze tint that reduces glare and adds a contemporary edge. It lets less light through than clear glass but creates a noticeably different mood. We see this used most in bathrooms with darker palettes or where the owner wants a slightly more dramatic result.

A good question to ask yourself is how much natural light the bathroom gets and how much you want the shower to feel like part of the room versus a defined zone. Hardware: Getting the Finish Right

The brackets and clips that hold a fixed panel in place are small details, but they have a noticeable impact on the finished look. Because a frameless panel has no frame to hide behind, the hardware is visible, and it should work with your tapware and fittings, not compete with them.

Mixing finishes can work in the hands of a designer, but for most bathroom renovations, consistency is the simpler and safer call.

If you are still selecting tapware when you are planning your screen, it is worth deciding on a finish direction first, then choosing tapware and hardware together. Retrofitting tapware after the screen is installed to match a bracket finish you chose first is a frustrating exercise.

Budget: What Affects the Price

Glass shower panel costs are generally affordable due to the relatively simple supply and installation process. No door mechanism, no track system, fewer components.

That said, several factors affect the final cost.

Panel size is the main driver. Larger panels require more glass and more structural hardware to safely carry the load. The glass type also plays a role: fluted, frosted, and tinted glass typically costs more than clear glass. Hardware finish can add a small premium for less common options.

As a rough guide, supply and installation of a single fixed panel typically starts from around $1,100 — though the final figure depends on your configuration, glass type, and site conditions. Budget estimates only; subject to on-site measure and quote.

The configuration matters too. A single fixed panel is simpler and less expensive to supply and install than a panel-with-return or a floor-to-ceiling setup.

I would not recommend cutting costs by undersizing the panel for your recess. Getting the water containment configuration right from the start saves money in the long run. Water that escapes the shower zone causes tile and grout damage over time. Get a fixed quote for the right solution, then make decisions from there.

What to Sort Out Before We Measure

A fixed glass shower panel depends on precision. Because there is no frame to hide behind, the surfaces the panel attaches to must be finished, level, and tiled before we can take measurements. We use laser-level tools on site, but they can only work with what is already there.

A few things worth knowing before installation day:

• Tiling must be complete. We measure to the final tiled surface, not the substrate. If the tiles are not finished, the panel will not fit correctly once they are. This is one of the most common delays we see on bathroom renovation jobs, and it is entirely avoidable with a bit of sequencing.
• Walls and floors need to be level. Frameless glass sits flush against tiled surfaces. If a wall is significantly out of plumb or a floor is uneven, it will show in the final installation and may affect water sealing. If you have concerns about the level of your surfaces, raise them with your tiler before the shower recess is finished.
• Ventilation matters more than people expect. A fixed panel creates a less sealed enclosure than a full shower screen with door and return. That means moisture needs somewhere to go. A bathroom without good exhaust ventilation will struggle with fogging, condensation on the glass, and mould growth on tiles and grout. If your bathroom exhaust is underperforming, it is worth addressing before or alongside your screen installation.

These are not obstacles. They are just things that run more smoothly when they are planned for in advance.
